Every 6 months, that’s a myth, right?

Just like “An apple a day keep the Doctor away” is popular saying, so is “See your Dentist every 6 months!”.

I subscribe that you should see me every 6 months, if not even more often.  I know in todays modern, busy world six months doesn’t seem like a long time, but a whole lot can happen in that time period.  Half a year, or 180 days is a whole lot of time medically speaking.

Depending on whether you’re one of the lucky ones who doesn’t accumulate very much plaque (Yeah, you!) coming in every 6 months may seem like a bit of a waste.  A quick cleaning and a cursory look over from me and you’re good to go.  However, if you’re one of the people who does accumulate lots of plaque, (Bummer!) every 6 months isn’t often enough.  You should really be getting your teeth cleaned at least every 3-4 months.

More importantly though, (and this goes for everyone, no matter how much plaque you accumulate) I need to see you every 6 months for a check up.   I often hear “Why?  Nothing hurts me!”  Well, unfortunately pain isn’t a good indicator of dental health.  Many things like infections and cavities just don’t hurt until they’re really rocking and rolling.

A quick visit with me, with diagnostic x-rays can find problems when they’re small and pain free, which lets me fix them for you quickly and cheaply.  If coming in every 6 months keeps you from calling me Saturday night in pain, resulting in a fix that costs you thousands of dollars, that’s a win/win for everyone, right?
